Review of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by Frederick M — 11 Jul 2009
Vey good film that deserves to be better known. After reading a little bit about it I discovered quite a bit of symbolism especiallyabout how the two Charlies are the two sides of the same coin. Joseph Cottten is an amazing villain.
The suspense is maintained until the very end of the film and the film is has a fantastic atmosphere: I really loved the beginning where the viewer is trying to understand what is going on. It is a wonder how the two basically naive parents gave birth to those two extraordinarily inteligent daughters! The way Uncle Charlie talks about life and especially widows never make them suspicous not to mention the blatant attempts of Uncle Charlie to kill their daughter! The recurring Merry Widow theme with the dancers is a nice touch.
Also the emphasis on Uncle Charlie's strong hands: genious! I strongly reccomend it!
