Review of Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero (2018) by Joseph D — 14 Apr 2018
Ten HUT! WOOF!
SGT. STUBBY.
An American Hero.
Out've all the things to make a kid's movie, you'd think a true World War 1 story wouldn't make the list. Well, unless it's about a cute scrappy dog, you'd be right. It works. Don't ask me how, but this short, sweet, less than one & a half hour flick about a dog that joins the army somehow works.
It's a period piece, set at the tail end of the First World War, & since it was animated, the look & feel were spot on, but at the same time, it had a timeless feel.
The animation was the best I've seen in a long time. There were some scenes that looked so real, I thought they'd used live footage. The people & Stubby were clearly animated, but they were so well portrayed, I could see the historical figures through the CGI.
The voice cast did a pretty good job, some I recognized, some were a surprise.
They wisely made Stubby a real dog; no talking, no human movements. Just the instincts & actions of a creature who's bond with humans has lasted tens of thousands of years for a reason. Now, I'm not a dog person, but I found myself rooting for Stubby & his troops the whole time.
The music was orchestral & thank goodness for that. It was the perfect accompaniment for this story.
Overall, Sergeant Stubby, An American Hero is a stirring historical piece, a classic "boy & his dog" tail, an epic war drama, & it's all wrapped up in a decent kid's film that I recommend for the whole family, especially if they're military. I salute SGT. Stubby with 4 stars out've 5.
