Review of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978) by Mark F — 25 Sep 2007
Why couldn't Across the Universe be as consistently entertaining as this movie? Obviously this is not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it's hilarious and fascinating. As Alan Cumming said, it's like what being on lsd feels like without actually doing.
There are some dead spots, but some of the sequences are so mind-blowing that they more than make up for the less-fun ones. I'm thinking specifically of the crazy way they use "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" to advance a major portion of the plot (WHAT??) or Steve Martin's insane turn as Maxwell (with his silver hammer, natch.
).
