Review of Sexy Beast (2001) by Nathan D — 20 Aug 2009
There is two men who make this film. The first is director Johnathan Glazer who came from making adverts (guiness) Tracing Ridley Scott's footsteps, he brings an unique visual imagination on what is actually a very simple, straight story. Accustomed to making an impact in 60 seconds, Glazer sets the theme and the place immediatley. A sun baked first act almost smells of burnt skin. While later scenes show Glazer as a master showman.
The 2nd key to this film is Sir Ben Kingsley, Who won a suprise oscar nomination for this role and finally lays Gandhi to rest with a turn so vicious you will believe Ray Winstone is shit scared of him.
Now I could say that Sext Beast is not about Gangsters, its about marriage, work and retirement. But it's about gangsters too. One of the last great British gangster films.
