Review of Sex Tape (2014) by Scotty M — 10 Sep 2014
Jay (Jason Segal) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) spend most of their free time in college having sex at every available opportunity, in the rooms, the car, bathroom an even the college library. They are completely sexually compatible and have a serious spark physically. 10 years and 2 kids later Annie and Jay find themselves firmly in the rat race lifestyle and struggle to find anytime to be intimate. Annie is an online blogger and is the voice of mid life mothers and Jay works in a record company. After a successful meeting with a publisher interested in buying her blog Annie is in the mood to celebrate, she arranges for the kids to stay in her parents house for the night so her and Jay have the night together alone. After multiple failed attempts to "get it back" that night they believe to get the spark back they need to make a sex tape. Unfortunately, technology and as we found out quite publicly recently the "iCloud" can be very cruel and having recorded their 3 hour sex tape on an iPad, Jay finds his sex tape has synced to every iPad he has ever owned and more importantly given away as gifts. Jay as I mentioned works in a record company and finds himself buying multiple iPads and discarding them regularly as gifts to family and friends when done. Suddenly all these people unknowingly have their 3 hour sex tape sitting on their device and so begins the frantic rush to get all the iPads back before their world crashes around them.
Lazy, just a lazy movie with a lazy premise coupled with lifeless performances from its cast. You would think the combination of Segal, Diaz and Jake Kasdan the director on a second project following Bad Teacher (2011) that their would be a natural chemistry between the two on screen or even written within the script, sadly not. Segal and Diaz had some great scenes together in Bad Teacher but fleshed out over a 90 minute production it just falls flat and resorts to cheap sex jokes. Much like Chef (2014) was a giant advertisement for Twitter, Sex Tape is a very obvious advertisement for Apple products and the iCloud, which one would believe has had enough media attention over the past 2 weeks following the iCloud leaks and the launch of the new iPhone 6. The supporting cast and the cameos from actors such as Jack Black and Rob Lowe are really the only saving grace in a sinking ship of a movie and grossly over shadow the heavy hitting hollywood duo. Segal to his credit has lost a lot of weight and looks very healthy and Diaz is her usual attractive half dressed self however she can add this to the list of duds she has put her name to in recent years. I've seen this movie so you don't have to, so, don't!
FutureProof Movie Review Score: 4.5.
