Review of Sex Tape (2014) by James B — 04 Nov 2014
"What sex tape? There's nothing to see here folks. "Sex Tape" doesn't have the courage to embrace it's concept.".
Movie Review: Sex Tape.

Nicholas Stoller, Story By Kate Angelo.

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel try so hard for laughs in "Sex Tape", I was surprised that they didn't get injured on set. "Sex Tape" is one of those movies that doesn't have the courage to embrace it's concept. Maybe Diaz, Segel and director Jake Kasdan should take lessons from the people who made "Neighbors", it might have been an out of control party but the movie embraced it's concept very well. Surprisingly, Nicholas Stoller, the director of "Neighbors", co-wrote "Sex Tape" with Segel and Kate Angelo (who previously wrote the godawful Jennifer Lopez rom-com The Back-Up Plan).
Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel play Annie and Jay, a couple who decide to make a sex tape. Years ago when they were still in college, they had sex all the time. After having two children and getting really good jobs, they have less time to have sex. Annie tries reignite her sex life with Jay by making a sex tape doing every position listed in "The Joy of Sex". Soon the picture goes downhill when Jay accidentally synchs the video to the iPads he gave to his friends and family. Why is Jay an iPad salesman? That is never explained.
Soon, Annie and Jay go on a desperate mission to collect the iPads and erase the videos but they are soon threatened by Howard (Harrison Holzer), a 11-year-old kid who happens to be the son of Jay's best friend Robbie (Rob Corddry). He threatens to upload the video to YouPorn unless they give him $25,000. Really movie! You give an 11-year-old boy the role of a blackmailer who threatens to upload a sex tape onto a porn site if he doesn't get $25,000. The best performance of the movie easily goes to Rob Lowe who plays Annie's boss. He owns a huge mansion, he likes loud music and he likes to do cocaine.
Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel previously teamed up together for "Bad Teacher", even though it didn't make the grade, they had some good chemistry together. Corddry and Ellie Kemper who play Jay and Annie's best friends don't have much to do here and we also get a surprise celebrity cameo, I won't give away who it is but he gives an unfunny performance as the owner of YouPorn. "Sex Tape" is a raunchy romantic comedy that will have you saying, "What sex tape?", "There's nothing to see here".
Instead of trying to erase the sex tape, maybe Diaz, Segel and director Kasdan (who did "Bad Teacher") should erase the entire movie and go back to the drawing board.
