Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Rabeea'h A — 09 Jul 2008
Infidelity, voyeurism, lack of intimacy and inability to communicate, I regret my five year anticipation to finally get around to this film, just wasn't worth the wait. Yes, I do understand why this film has been seminal with its shock wave to big-budget films and beginning a marketing strategy to cultivate more independent film makers but thats where it pretty much ends. Soderbergh just pressed a little too hard on the video camera metaphor for percieving people as mere images and objects. Watch Noe, Marker or Tarkovsky for an infinitively better treatment of the subject.
Referring to the tapes:
''What if he beams it off some satellite?'' (that did make me burst out laughing).
Theres an interesting diatribe at the 80th minute for which I'm giving it the two and half stars, but the climax really wasn't as satisfying to justify the 80 minute buildup. That with Spaders character and acting made the film a little interesting and rescued it from being termed a mere pop psych wank.
