Review of Sex Drive (2008) by Tomas T — 20 Mar 2011
Sex Drive is a good attempt to overthrow long lived king of sex comedies - the American Pie - but falls few feets short. Granted I watched the Unrated version of the movie despite all the warnings given by the makers and surely those warnings were not in vain. I believe the vast majority of the people are better off with the normal theaterical version of the Sex Drive than the overly long Unrated version.
The story of Sex Drive needs no long intro as it is the classic story of young man's struggle for manhood. The natural place to look for quick love now days is the Internet and thus begins the great roadtrip to hook up with a unknown lady and be rid of shamefull virginity. The long roadtrip contains all of the cliche jokes typically found in sex comedies making the laughs short and long between but there are few highlights. One of them is in the form of the crazed "bro" by James Marsden; he is honestly funny and finally tops the infamous American Pie's Stiffmeister. Unfortunately he alone cannot save the show from Clark Duke who plays the hip to the bone fat nerd whom everybody seem to love for no real reason. Please enlighten me on what world/dimension is this fellow even remotely funny? The last big cliche is sadly the main character by Josh Zuckerman who cannot get anything right, except being a total douchebag for the whole 1h 50min running time of the movie. Sigh..
Sex Drive ain't a total disaster, but close. My hunch being that the normal theaterical version with shorter running time and less ugly naked ladies could have even far better, even ok:ish, but the Unrated version is just way, way too long. There really should be a mandatory rule for sex comedies which forbids them from lasting more than 1h 30mins, the distastefull jokes carry a movie only so long after all.
