Review of Sex Drive (2003) by Jesse O — 01 Sep 2010
Per sex movie standards, this movie ain't half bad. It's pretty good for the most part. The problem I have with the movie (and not necessarily the movie itself) is that Starz On Demand chose to ONLY include the unrated version of the flick.
The unrated version is TWENTY minutes longer than the theatrical version, so that makes this flick a 2+ hour movie. This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. It's way too long for this kind of movie. When I first saw the movie and its length on the screen where you order I was like "This movie can't possibly be this long".
Also the unrated version IS really just for the fans (and they even mention this in the intro piece, which was funny) so I don't know why the people who choose the programming for Starz On Demand would only include this longer version.
In the intro piece the director (and screenwriter) promised more bare tits and cocks and goddamnit they sure as shit were not lying. Every so often naked females would just be edited into a scene. No matter if they were at the mall, or in the street, they would just be poorly edited whatever scene they wanted.
It had no rhyme or purpose and it was just so obviously edited in AFTER the fact that it was just funny. There's also a bunch of screw-ups in the movie itself. Sometimes the actor would break out laughing for real and the director would just yell cut and the camera would be on the crew just there, laughing.
It was so absurd, and it just added to the charm of the movie, I really couldn't hate this movie because of that. Hell the funniest part of the movie is probably only featured in the unrated version.
Clark Duke's character is running naked through a field (now Clark Duke is a VERY white man) and all of a sudden the next cut is a shot of a black dude's cock bouncing up and down as if he were running.
This scene fucking CRACKED me up because it was something that I didn't need to see, yet they kept the camera on this dude's cock bouncing up and down for like 20 seconds and I just broke. There's also another scene in the trailer park when they're talking to the old man and his balls are hanging out and they showed a close-up of the balls for like 40 seconds, and if I'm off with that number it's only by a couple of seconds.
Obviously I'm sure that ball close up scene was for the unrated version, since I can't see them getting away with that on the theatrical version and have it not be NC-17. To be completely honest I think the absurdity of all the unrated shit was part of the reason I enjoyed this movie.
I think if I watched the original version of the film, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. But at the same time, 2+ hours for a sex comedy is UNACCEPTABLE. And I also liked that little skit Seth Green and Fall Out Boy did, that last little ad-lib by Seth Green made it so fucking awesome because you could tell DOUCHE-FACE wasn't expecting it.
So while I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, I can't really recommend it since the unrated stuff will most likely be a turn-off for some people. If you REALLY wanna see this movie (god knows why? I mean its solid but it's not mindblowing) then I'd suggest watching the unrated version, but ONLY if you really need to see it, if not, then don't even bother just go watch Scott Pilgrim vs.
The World.
