Review of Sex Drive (2003) by Kevin D — 18 Jan 2011
Pretty funny and entertaining road movie/teen comedy. We've all seen this type of movie before, but a lot of the jokes and concepts here felt new and original. The style of the movie was pretty flashy. The film used lots of cuts and it had some interesting graphics pop up during the instant messaging scenes. The film had some good satire on technology and the internet through its use of flashy graphics.
The movie is dirty from start to finish which is fine with me. Most of the jokes were really funny and I give the writers props for some of the ones that failed, just for the fact that they were bold enough to write some of these demented scenes. The movie loses some points for a few obviously sentimental scenes and for jokes that this one stole.
I would just like to say that there was a scene in this movie were the main trio of characters run over a bunny in a car. The kid that is driving notices that the bunny is still alive and the group decides that they want to take the animal out of its misery, so they hit it with some tire changing object. The punchline is that the bunny just won't die. That seems somewhat funny, right? Yeah it does. The thing is that I liked that scene a lot better when it was in Freddy Got Fingered (in that case it was with a cow). In that case this movie was like Carlos Mencia and Freddy Got Fingered is the comedians that Mencia steals jokes from. The movie also had its fair share of unfunny physical comedy.
There was also a scene in a prison with such a stupid scene. It was a warning/plea scene that we've seen in so many other movies and it was almost like the writers of this movie had a checklist of things they had to include in the film, including that phony sentimental scene.
The three lead actors in the film were fun and nice to watch. There were some nice cameos as well including my boy David Koechner and Seth Green, who stole the show. This movie is filled with raunchy un-politically correct humor that I like a lot. I just wished that a few more elements of the screenplay could have been more original.
