Review of Sex and Lucía (2001) by Kai S — 22 Jul 2009
"LucÃa y el Sexo" is the story about LucÃa, a young waitress in a restaurant in the centre of Madrid. After what she believes to be the loss of her boyfriend, the tortured writer Lorenzo, she flees to a secluded island that he had often told her about. Various lives, including LucÃa's, converge on the isolated island, and all begin to connect through Lorenzo's novel.
So what does it all mean? What is in the writer's novel that brings these people together? You never really know for sure until the end but when you get there it's very rewarding. Director Julio Medem does a fantastic job of toying with the audiences' minds so you never really know what is going on.
Each character is beautifully fleshed out and the screenplay is just amazing. This is one of those rare movies where you feel like you share an intimate relationship with each of these characters; like you've known them. Another great achievement is the cinematography. It is just absolutely stunning. Each shot is so richly detailed that I could put it on mute and just enjoy the aesthetics of it.
Besides being a story about tragedy and lost translations, "LucÃa y el Sexo".
Is also about sex (the title is not a pun) and the power of it. In most films, sex is used unnecessarily used just for the sake of using it. In this one, it is the driving force of the plot. It helps you to understand what these people feel for each other emotionally. You probably won't see another film with so much nudity and intercourse, but it's not once used out of context.
