Review of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (2010) by The D — 27 May 2010
Interesting, disturbing, colourful, sad & surreal tale of one of the most original punk rock artists of a generation.
Andy Serkis is hugely animated as Ian Dury. After being struck down by Polio aged 7 and permanently disabled he was left by his Father at a school specifically for the disabled which aim was to "toughen them up".
Of course he rebelled against one warder in particular menacingly played by Toby Jones.
The story picks up in the late 60's just as his son, Baxter, is born. This is where the movie takes it's centre. The influence of Ian's father, Bill played by Ray Winstone, then the influence Ian has on Baxter as he grows up.
There is sex, drugs, rock n roll & also tempers, tantrums, fights, accidents in quite a turbulent life.
Detailed attention is paid to the relationship between Ian & Chas, fellow Blockhead & their writing methods running up the controversial International Year of The Disabled Persons & the song Spasticus Autisticus.
It's well worth watching whether you're a fan or not.
Sadly Ian Dury died of cancer in 2000.
