Review of Severance (2006) by Erik O — 25 Jul 2009
This film gives me new hope for modern Slasher Flicks. The plot is, more or less, conventional Slasher fair... which was just fine with me. But what impressed me the most was how much I liked the characters.
Yes, for the most part, they were cookie-cutter Slasher Flick characters. But they were different in that they were all mostly likeable, intelligent and sympathetic. I enjoyed rooting for them, and there was never a moment when I thought, "Ya know, I really hope that guy gets it.
" I'd say it's the characters that set this film apart from all the other Slasher Flicks out there. Another thing I enjoyed was its ability to be both funny and creepy. Most "Horror-Comedies" are either one or the other, but I think this film was fairly successful at balancing the two.
I was pleasantly surprised.
