Review of Seventh Son (2014) by Priscilla B — 10 Mar 2015
This won't appeal to everyone and I think I know why the Americans bagged it. The Director is Russian and it's more like an old Roman Polanski film from Europe than the standard Hollywood fantasy.
So the formula is different. You have to think. Probably why so many Yanks simply didn't get it. I liked it. The movie did not take itself seriously like the yawn yawn Hobbit series. It was fun and silly and larger than life.
It was entertainment folks but one that engaged you and kept you involved guessing what's up next. Taken on face value and compared to the tripe spewed out by Hollywood it doesn't match expectations.
That's not a bad thing. It's different and it's fun and well done with a cheeky Russian feel. Get over it USA. You don't own the formula for making a dragon movie. Great actors doing their best in a Terry Gillian meets Roman Polanski flick.
4 stars.
