Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Amice L — 08 Sep 2010
Yes... this film is probably the greatest of all time. It's epic and intimate with it's characters. It establishes the time and place perfectly. It would probably suffer if it was in color rather than black and white.
Mifune's character is both the most powerful presense while maintain perfect balance with the rest of the samurai characters. Most importantly, for the effort and build up, the climactic battles proceed in the most satisfying and appropriate manner.
It's a "tour de force" as much as that tired cliche has ever been used.
