Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Johannes R — 03 Mar 2011
3.3.2011.
Among the greatest films ever made, it's masterclass film-making in every way. The story is strong, the characters memorable, the thematics of the film from psychology to Japanese history and culture well explored. The editing is dead-on and the visuals amazing - the final battle in the rain among the greatest moments in cinema. It's emotionally moving. And in almost three and half hours it allows us to follow the progression of events, of characters, how they unravel in a story. It allows us to explore and experience. The time itself becomes a character in the film. Then there are the mirror scenes, camera-movements and compositions. How Kurosawa creates action on different planes. Great visual storytelling with depth.
