Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Corey N — 26 Mar 2011
So the Seven Samurai was a film I was not interested in at first. But after reading so many great reviews on it I gave it a chance. And I am glad I did. This film from 1954 made a few years after WWII is well done for it's tme in Japan.
The story has a village in feudal Japan hire seven samurai to defend them from bandits. The story is great and the characters in this film are fun and interesting. The story is subtitled for those who do not read or speak Japanese.
But I prefer it this way to make this Japanese story more authentic. Director Akira Kurosawa does a excellent job in making this black and white film stand the test of time. The move is almost three hours long but worth it for the story to work.
The film went on to be nominated for two Oscars which is a great acheivement for it's time. This film even inspired the western remake The Magnificent Seven years later. I would suggest anyone to watch this.
Well worth the time.
