Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Paul W — 05 Aug 2011
It's long and some of the acting bears the mark of the era in which it was made, but the pulling together of several story-telling devices and the effort at authenticity can't be denied. I can't help but appreciate that none of this film was shot on a set.
I wish the quality had been higher so that the scenery would be more vivid, but alas... I found myself constantly irritated by the acting style of the film: so many characters are overly dramatic. But this does go some ways in emphasizing the positive qualities of the warrior class: calm, deliberate, rational.
Despite it's quaintness by today's standards, the film maintains its place among other groundbreaking efforts. I enjoyed it and recommend it.
