Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Zbigniew Z — 20 Jan 2012
This is truly a master film by a master filmmaker. This film is about a village who is under siege by bandits, and a few men from the village go into town to find samurai for protection. "Seven Samurai" has two of the greatest Japanese actors of all time in it, Takashi Shimura (Ikiru, Rashomon, Godzilla) and Toshiro Mifune (Yojimbo, Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood) who play two of the seven samurai that protect the town.
Even though this film is three hours and thirty minutes long you feel like it goes by in about five because you get so enthralled with the actions in this movies that the running time does not make a difference.
The final battle scene in this film is one of the most well shot scenes committed to celluloid. The use of the rain (one of Kurosawa's trademarks) is masterfully used in this film, you almost feel like the rain is another character in the film (especially in the final battle scene).
Highly recommended by me, and my favorite film of all time.
