Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Gavin S — 24 Nov 2012
If I could give this 6 stars I would. Epic, Glorious, Gorgeous, worth every single of the 207 minutes of running time. Fantastic performances by all, especially Takashi Shimura as Kambei, the leader of the group and Toshiro Mifune as Kikuchiyo the wild man would-be samurai.
The cinematography is gorgeous and brilliant, the use of lighting and dark; the score is epic yet understated, the direction is a marvel. This may be the most imitated film of all time, which tells you just something of how good it really is.
Kurosawa is amazing, making a movie of 3 1/2 hours fly by without dragging once or having a single superfluous scene. Kurosawa was influenced by John Ford, who in turn, was influenced (along with everyone else) by Seven Samurai.
I cannot say enough about how good this movie is. Just watch it. I don't care if it's long, or black and white, or in Japanese, it's probably influenced a whole bunch of movies you've seen already.
