Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Alex P — 13 Dec 2012
I won't say anything new about this film, but that isn't to say I didn't enjoy it. Kurosawa directs with masterful style and precision, but also with an abundance of heart and emotion. The story is at heart intimate, but epic in scope, and the acting is pretty good (at least from what I can judge, based on my limited knowledge of Japanese mannerisms and culture).
While it might seem blasphemous to state shortcomings of the film, and these are not really general problems, but something that didn't work for me. The film is somewhat slowish, but given the character of the story that fits, but not for me, I would have preferred a bit more pace.
The story, while beautifully done, is pretty straightforward, I wanna say simple, but it's deceptively simple, while being straight and classically done. Like I said it's a matter of personal preference, but it's historical importance can't be stated enough.
