Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Jj S — 09 Aug 2013
"Seven Samurai" is the perfect epic in my mind. The plot is simple: a village of farmers hires seven samurai to protect them from heartless bandits in exchange for food. The characters are all fun and everyone will have their favorite pick.
You truly care for the lives and safety of the characters. The action scenes are still breath-taking today and suspenseful. The four hours pass as if the movie was 20 minutes long. The plot is simple and easy to follow, but is nevertheless layered and filled with messages.
Kurosawa's direction is so effective that you let yourself get lost in the film. I really enjoyed how it did not just show the farmers as helpless victims. At the end of the day, they use the farmers for their own protection and might even forget about them.
It is the only action film I have ever scene that contains energy, excitement, and more depth than Oscar- winning dramas. "Seven Samurai" is an epic tale of selflessness as the biggest sacrifice with fun characters and an amusing story with a message.
