Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Colin Y — 26 Dec 2013
When I was growing up one of my favorite movies was the Magnificent Seven. My father had always told me that it was a carbon copy of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. I have always wanted to see this movie, and I have only just gotten around to seeing it.
I was blown away by this influential masterpiece from Kurosawa. Every aspect of the film was perfect. The character development, rich and complex gave personality to all seven of the samurai. Even the villagers like Rikichi were developed in such a way that makes the viewer really empathize with them.
The script was witty, yet sensitive and poignant and the cinematography was breathtaking. I especially enjoyed the scene when Kyuzo emerged with a stolen musket in thick fog. The icing on the cake are the battle scenes.
After watching Seven Samurai it is easy to see why it is one of the most influential movies in cinematic history. For any movie fan, Kurosawa's masterpiece is a must see.
