Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Patrick Y — 17 Oct 2014
A rare, flawless film, Kurosawa's Seven Samurai is both epic in scale and yet delightfully humanistic in tone. On the surface, Seven Samurai focuses on villagers who hire samurai to protect them from raiding bandits.
Yet, its deceptively simplistic plot betrays an examination of duty, honor, and sacrifice. Wholly deserving of the label "classic," Seven Samurai is the template for action films that continues to inspire today's Hollywood blockbusters.
