Review of Seven Psychopaths (2012) by Jerem M — 20 Jun 2013
This movie plays like a Tarantino knock-off trying to be a Charlie Kauffman knock-off. It's like Pulp Fiction meets Adaptation. At least that's what it wants to be. The script starts out very taut and clever - almost too clever - but soon starts to meander.
McDonagh lets his actors improvise far too much in a film that should be much sharper. That said, Sam Rockwell single-handedly carries this star-heavy dud. He's outstanding as usual. (Why doesn't he get way more work? Is he just picky?) Even though the story falls apart in the second half, the first half is good enough to warrant a recommend.
Still, it doesn't hold a candle to In Bruges.
