Review of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) by Joe L — 26 Oct 2009
Has sexism ever been so exuberant?! and fun!? of course the film is a portrait of the times, when families were relishing traditional sexual roles, and what better way to do it than through a musical about (good-hearted) horny men scheming to kidnap a gaggle of sisters to make them their wife slaves? unless you're a musical theatre completist, I would recommend only watching the big, excellently choreographed, and ridiculously skillfully performed show-down dance sequence, and then watch either 'the band wagon,' or 'an american in paris' for great musicals of the 50's.
I just could not get past the oddness of the central premise.
