Review of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) by Megan K — 27 Mar 2011
It has been the longest time since I have seen a truly memorable musical-film that generates such a sense of enjoyment, and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" goes above and beyond that ideal.
I will tell you right away that this film is definitely a period piece [1954], but if you go into this MGM classic knowing this, you will really enjoy yourself. There were some really fun and comedic songs written for the picture such as "Bless Your Beautiful Hide" and "Goin' Courtin", as well as a really touching/sappy song "Love Never Goes Away".
The beautiful cinematography (even if some of it is a painted backdrop) and mind-blowing dance sequences (note to self: pick up women by learning how to do those crazy dance moves) compliment the atmosphere of the movie and its performances in such a stunning charisma that you will see yourself thinking (or like me, saying out loud) "Whoa!.
..I [wish I] could do that!" This film may be considered a bit cheesy for today's standards, but it only reminds us of how the other greats from this era (Including "Singin' In The Rain" and "Guys and Dolls") had such a way of impacting a smile on our faces.
It's an overall very fun musical, and if you could use a genuine smile in today's day and age, this is the movie for you.
