Review of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) by Mike S — 07 Aug 2015
I last saw this musical comedy when I was a teenager, but I always wanted to see it again. When I finally got the chance, I was worried it wouldn't hold up, but I'm pleased to see that it's just as entertaining as I remembered it.
A clan of seven brothers in the backwoods of mid-19th century Oregon decide to go to town to find themselves some brides. The young ladies' parents and suitors don't take kindly to this. There is a spectacular dance number during which the brothers and the suitors face off at a barn-raising.
The film was made on a very tight budget, and it shows in the painted backdrops and limited sets. But the cast is excellent, the songs are enjoyable, and the script is quite funny.
