Review of Serpico (1973) by Movie G — 23 Aug 2011
I don't really have a lot to say about Serpico. It was a great cop movie, but not a masterpiece. I've always been a fan of true stories and this movie is no exception. It tells the story of a New York cop trying to bring down all thne corrupt cops, but every person he goes to for help is just as corrupt.
The direction was good, although cliche by todays standards. It was nice to see that the entire thing was filmed in New York and you really got the vibe of it. The music was good, but not great. It suited the movie and wasn't the cliche shaft-esque cop music.
The real highlight of the movie is Pacino. His performance is dynamic and bizarre, just like his character. He can pass as an authoritive figure, a total hippie, a mad, crazed boyfriend, and it's all brilliant.
It's one of his best performances, just falling short of The Godfather Part II and his finest achievement Dog Day Afternoon. The rest of the acting was good, but no one had a big enough part to mention really.
Overall Serpico is one of the better 70s cop movies and is helped by its originality and terrific acting.
