This film belongs to a moment in cinema when films were not about happy ending.

Al Pacino outdoes himself in this true story, proving to be perfect in the part of Francis Serpico, a martyr to the cause of foiling the NYC police corruption.

But there is more... the corruption here is at a higher level, it's global, and there is no way out. The good guys can only stand and wait to be shot.

You can say it's not a light film, however it's not common to find a film which has the guts to tell it as it is, but I guess those were the times.

It fits somewhere not far from Dogday afternoon but sometimes it also reminds me a bit the alienation that you feel in Taxi Driver; the difference here is that the topic is too fucking rational. The nightmare is reality, or the reality is a nightmare. As you like.

This review of Serpico (1973) was written by on 19 Jul 2011.

Serpico has generally received very positive reviews.
