Review of Serpico (1973) by Private U — 01 Feb 2009
Really unconventional for a Pacino film. Serpico may be an Italian-American but that's probably the only thing he has in common with other the Pacino roles. Serpico is not just an honest cop but he is also looked at as a weirdo due to his actions and style of dressing.
This is one film in which Pacino shows that there's more to him than playing mobsters. Lumet may be a famous director (it's the first movie of his that I liked after the first viewing) but Dede Allen deserves praise for her editing.
It takes a long time for the whole story to unravel yet the scenes throughout the film don't drag on so the movie moves at a quicker pace. Very few long bits, if any at all. Just short scenes with many essential details.
If you think Pacino was just good for mob movies, watch this.
