Review of Serenity (2015) by Phillip D — 01 Aug 2014
It is rare that a movie picks up where a television show left off and dramatically improves upon that. Serenity does that and more. Taking the already endearing and well executed material from the Firefly series and turning it into so much more, Serenity excels from start to finish.
The movie is a bit rough around the edges and like any science fiction movie there are a few poorly done moments. But overall Serenity soars with a top notch cast, expansive world creation and a storyline that ranks among the best.
Also, although the movie borrows heavily from previous science fiction endeavors, it gives back to the genre, opening new horizons in the space western arena. At the end of the day, Joss Whedon offers us one of the science fiction greats for budget under 40 million, something James Cameron couldn't do with 300 million.
This is a credit to Whedon's imaginative mind and stellar directing. Serenity is his greatest work.
