Review of Serenity (2015) by Bill M — 07 Aug 2013
Serenity is a superb big screen continuation (and sadly it would seem conclusion) of firefly, in bringing his own show to the big screen Joss whedon shows real skill and confidence in only his second cinematic outing.
Serenity works brilliantly as two things, as a film for fans and a fantastic standalone adventure for newcomers, it economicaly sets up the plot, starting cleverly before the events of the show with simon breaking river out of a maximum security goverment lab, and then jumping forward to current, post firefly events in a very sharp seemingly single shot taking us through the ship and re-introducing or setting up characters, it's an efficient way to establish the world for newbies whilst bring us browncoats up to speed on where our characters are.
It's fast paced, inventive and has a relentless, constantly moving plot full of incident and plot turns. One of the most thrilling, hugely enjoyable and cool sci-fi adventure movies ever made, up there with star wars.
