Review of Serendipity (2001) by Tonypolito — 09 Oct 2010
Yes, the viewer has to suspend any semblance of disbelief to survive the tsunami of impossible coincidences that occur in this "Sleepless in Seattle" meets "Next Stop Wonderland" plotline.
But then again that's exactly the point of this magical realism & karma-infused tale of cutesy romance - that true romantics are forever in wait of Divine Fate to bring their one and only, perfectly matched, true love right to the footstoop of their brownstone. And that, every once in a great while, it will.
Cusack delivers well as the male half of this vexed and pining duo, as the viewer sees his face slowly overcome by his acceptance of his own destiny with Beckinsale - his current wedding plans notwithstanding - as the film progresses. Beckinsale is lovely but she doesn't communicate the same through her own performance.
An enchanting soundtrack, with Nick Drake's "Northern Sky" an exquisite choice for the moment of the duo's ultimate reunion.
RECOMMENDATION: A thoughtful and uplifting reminder as to just how one should go about his/her own search for a soulmate. Well recommended.
