Review of Seraphim Falls (2007) by Ditka O — 01 Jun 2009
A tale of a man who forsakes his existence in a quest for revenge and a tale of another man who's haunted by the ghosts of his past and seeks to escape the inevitable.
Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan portray two different, and yet similar, imaginary characters set against the aftermath of the Civil War. Their interwoven tales craftily produce a dramatic crescendo of increasing violence set against the wintry and arid landscapes of Nevada.
Along the way they encounter several peculiar characters who play a significant role in producing the final outcome.
**SPOILER**.
The final scene, where the two take different paths and behind them lay the weapons of their mutual contempt, is brilliant and provides an understandable conclusion.
**END OF THE SPOILER**.
Overall an excellent movie with an impressive performance by the two lead actors. There is a sense of vacuum, of meaninglessness of human ideals and passions when these are exacerbated by the mechanisms of fate. The futility of obsession and the extent to which it may drive a man are supremely highlighted here.
