Review of September Dawn (2007) by Robert C — 23 Aug 2007
The trailers make this look like a good movie. The real-life subject matter is compelling, and Jon Voit looks right at home playing a devout frontiersman with all the power in town. Too bad there aren't any real-life performances.
September Dawn feels like a bad division 1A High School stage play. The acting is HORRIBLE. Dialogue is roll-your-eyes awful, and the actors are as paper-thin as the pages of the poorly written script. Unfortuantely, mastery of the 1870s language is the least of this films problems.
The plot is bogged down by one of the lamest Romeo and Juliet rip-offs I've seen in recent memory. Characters' motivation for certain actions make no sense at all, and they preach and preach and preach, heavy handedly about Christian morality, or lack there of. Marketed as the movie Brigham Young wouldn't want you to see, the film is 100% boring, though I got a sick kick out of finally watching the massacre at the end. Probably because I hated everyone envolved with the movie by this point and I wanted them all to die.
