Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Robert C — 23 Dec 2017
Call Me by Your Name is one of the best movies I've seen in recent years- gorgeously shot, earnestly portrayed, indelible, and ultimately transcendent. Luca Guadagnino engrosses you in a naturalistic world that bristles with unconsummated lust.
By the time the raw sensuality and obvious attraction between Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer slowly simmers into longing and bubbles over into tender love, the audience is transfixed and enchanted.
This film accomplishes what the best cinema aspires to achieve- it constructs a reality, draws the audience in, and brings them on the film's journey of emotions. Through the honesty and sincerity of its characters, this paean to the impossible, inimitable, and inevitable nature of first love leaves the audience reeling in its own bittersweet remembrances of loves found, lost, and treasured.
It's a miraculous achievement.
