Review of Sense and Sensibility (1995) by D H — 26 Jul 2009
I haven't seen another recent adaptation of Austen that has captured her ironic, guarded approach to love as well as this. The Kiera Knightly PRIDE AND PREJUDICE injects a sweeping passion and unbridled romantic attitude, which is all well and good for giving your cinematographer something to do but which simply doesn't exist in the novels.
Austen is a fiercely intelligent writer who approaches passion only through a starting point of sense and dry humor. Emma Thompson, another woman who gives the impression of fierce intelligence, takes many liberties in her screenplay but manages to grasp at the spirit of Jane Austen like few others have.
