Review of Sense and Sensibility (1995) by Amy P — 01 Aug 2009
Now, my perspective comes from someone who has not read the book, but has just seen the movie...
Hated it!
This movie has won awards for its cinematography. What I would recommend then, is to watch it w/the MUTE button on.
Basically, the message of this movie is that if you follow your passions, you will end up falling for a jerk. Now granted, sometimes you may fall for a guy who turns out to be a deceiver. Sometimes he turns out to be a manipulator. Sometimes he turns out to be the father of an illegitimate child.
And sometimes he could turn out to be a decent guy.
So Kate Winslet falls for this guy that she has an incredible connection with. He breaks her heart and she almost dies. Then this older guy saves her life. And she marries him.
Don't get me wrong, it's nice that he saved her life and all. The thing is, this guy is Professor Snape.
Now, I know that looks aren't everything, but if one were to ask, "Who should Professor Snape marry?" The immediate response is not usually, "I know! Kate Winslet!" And vise versa.
So Kate Winslet marries Professor Snape. And you can tell that she is not really excited about it. Nice guy, but they aren't exactly soul mates.
And this is the lesson that women are supossed to learn??
Now the movie did have one good point where Kate Winslet's character makes fun of Emma Thompson's for not showing enough passion. I don't think that's fair either. And when Kate Winslet's character almost died, the movie did bring me to tears. That's where the one star comes in. But really I think it deserves a big fat ZERO for its marginalization of women.
Only at the end though I wanted to cry again-- because the movie was so bad!
