Review of Senna (2010) by Lorten C — 29 Oct 2011
Whilst hating F1 Senna made a crossover impact on me when I was younger. This is undoubtedly a strong documentary, but at times I was still bored by the subject-matter.
It takes a long time to get going. The chronological tale made for a tedious opening 45 minutes, and it only really gets going as the Prost rivalry comes to a head. Then you have the real appeal: the rivalry with Frenchman Alain â~The Professorâ(TM) Prost, the crashes, backroom politics, the rapturous Brazilian fans, the appeals to God and the tragic ending.
Inevitably, a cloud of doom hangs over the filmâ(TM)s finale, and the exellent score, moving from electro-jazz to more orchestral sounds and always with a distinctly Brazilian vibe, adjusts to remind us whatâ(TM)s coming.
I have to say I felt a little sorry for Prost. His dull and has a big nose, but does that really make him the baddie? Senna was at times arrogant and a a reckless driver ultimately. F1 boss Jean-Marie Balestre emerges as the filmâ(TM)s true villain. â~The best decision is my decision,â(TM) he growls, smiling. Itâ(TM)s hard not to boo in a pantomime fashion at the screen.
