Review of Senna (2010) by Mike R — 01 Mar 2014
I was not a fan of Senna when he was racing, but after seeing this film my appreciation for him as a driver and a man grew. I always viewed Senna as a driver who was happy to knock others out of his way to win. That opinion wasn't entirely invalidated by the film, but the events therein did add a level of nuance for his situation I hadn't previously appreciated.
As an infrequent observer of F1, I also viewed Senna as a beneficiary of the rampant unregulated technology that has ruined F1 (as well as IndyCar) racing and I'm forced to admit that opinion was mistaken. The guy was a great race car driver. I wish the movie could have spent a little more time explaining how uncontrolled technology can destroy the beauty of racing as a contest between drivers, rather than engineers, but I understand the filmmaker's desire to avoid bogging down the story with too much technical detail. Senna is a good movie for racers, race fans and the general public alike.
