Review of Self/less (2015) by Greg B — 10 Jul 2015
Ryan Reynolds takes us through a thrilling odyssey to take on the eternal question of immortality. When cutting edge reserved for the uber rich medicine grants that wish, what male wouldn't first hit the basketball court for a pickup game, later that night hit the nightclub, imbibe copious amounts of alcohol, and take random woman after random woman home night after night in a silver Lamborghini.
In a year where the field of movies has been clichéd with apocalyptic themes of cell phone OS upgrade invasions and artificial intelligence vying for world domination (Kingsman, Terminator Genisys, Avengers Age of Ultron), Self/Less is a refreshing, original, quirky, creepy piece of entertainment.
As Damian pits his wits and nascent Army ranger skills against the evil Phoenix Biogenics, a reverse Bourne identity joy ride ensues where Damian is actually fighting the memories, while exploiting his killing prowess! Critics don't know what they're talking about! Astonishing in cinematic pastoral scenes of the backwoods of Missouri and the New Orleans French Quarter, you will be in for a treat for your senses.
Armed only with his Macbook Pro and motel Wifi, Damian googles his way to his nemesis' covert hideout. While my audience mates one by one filed out before the final showdown, those of us who stayed through the post credits were rewarded with a more than satisfying Trading Places-esque ending.
