Review of Self/less (2015) by Robert C — 20 Jan 2016
Man, I'm stupid. I actually expected Singh to direct a smart, cool, sci-fi thriller. Stupid. stupid, stupid. This film has a really interesting idea at it's core, and there are plenty of other interesting ideas that spring from that one.
Lots of ideas just waiting to be explored and played with, but the film just won't . What we get instead is a typical, mindless, super silly sci-fi thriller. There are plenty of parts that are predictable (plenty I had called well before I even pressed play), and very little fun is had.
Heck, we barely get any time of Ryan Reynolds/Ben Kingsley having fun in his new body. The cool organization quickly turns stereotypically evil, and it's founder wastes no time in becoming a sneering, typical villain.
So much potential, so many ideas....just wasted. Ryan Reynolds and Matthew Goode as our hero and villain are pretty good, but their acting prowess alone can't save what is a bland, uninteresting, dull, uninspired, dumb, cliche'd and ultimately very disappointing film.
