Review of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) by Frances H — 20 Apr 2013
This is an odd one. It started off seeming like a typical Steve Carell comedy, only for it to become clear that Carell wasn't being funny, or even trying to be so. It's a strange central performance from him as for much of the film he has the energy and appearance of someone on Prozac.
Keira Knightley is left to provide most of the laughs and she actually manages pretty well, this display being slightly reminiscent of Kate Winslet's display in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
The film itself takes a darker turn in its second half but this ends up being more suited to Carell's character and the conclusion is heartfelt and poignant. A flawed film but worth a look.
