Review of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) by Silvia B — 20 Feb 2013
If you know me, I am a huge fan of this kind of genre. Love this kind of apocalyptic stuff. So I was very excited for this movie to come out because of the subject matter and I thought it would be a heartfelt and funny way to ring in the end of the world. Well, to be honest, I didn't get exactly what I had hoped for, but it was pretty close. There were some flaws, but the acting was good, it was shot and directed well, and it was satisfying to me in the long run, even if the writing wasn't so stellar.
*SPOILER ALERT, but I liked how in the end it didn't give you a happy ending like most movies like this would. Well, I guess you could call Carrell and Knightley's happiness together is a happy ending, but the meteor still hit and everyone still died. Actually, scratch that, this could be debated. I say this because although there were the sure sounds of smaller meteors impacting, it never actually showed the big one. It cut out before and a lot of people thought that was disappointing. I disagree, I thought it was a pretty cool way to do it. It brings about the question of did the earth live and the two of them lived happily ever after?, or did the meteor hit and everyone died? I hate to be a downer but I do like he second one a lot more.
All in all, a good movie. It had its ups and downs but in the end it succeeded at what it was attempting. I think the acting was passable, it was shot and directing well, and it gave me what I asked for. I liked it and I would recommend it to somebody who likes this kind of subject matter. A nice movie.
