Review of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) by Damjan R — 03 May 2013
Strip the film of its hook, and what do you get? Pretty much the same film, except no character motivation. But how is that a bad thing, well it shows passive characters that just exist in their environment.
Dodge & Penny would have gone their entire lives without any interaction if not for accidental meetings and an impending meteor strike, that turns out was miscalculated. What happens next you can pretty much guess with an almost impeccable certainty.
The couple up and live their final days the way they should have lived their entire lives. There is some overtly screenplay-ish about this type of film that I don't like. Insert generous cliches about lurid and reckless behavior that comes with the apocalypse and what the film accomplishes is the creation of a world where anything is possible.
With any possibility there are pretty much no limits to what the writer (and director in this case) can drum up and the film reflects that. Carrell and Knightley are charming in this film, and are just about its only saving grace.
Recommended for fans of either Carrell, Knightley and romantics of the world, just be mindful of your expectations.
