Review of Secrets & Lies (1996) by Stuart P — 31 Oct 2007
One of Mike Leigh's most formulaic ventures, but still beautifully performed (although Brenda Blethyn is rather shrill). Its formula trappings should not serve to underrate this "Mismatched Race" kitchen sink comedy as Academy nominations have overrated it.
A good entrance into Leigh's thatcher-venting, and then onward to 'Naked', 'Life is Sweet', 'Vera Drake', and 'Topsy-Turvey' among others afterwards.
