Review of Secrets & Lies (1996) by Nicholas E — 10 Jul 2012
Mike Leigh's collaborative approaching to crafting characters with his actors always allow his working class ensemble dramas to really pop, and "Secrets & Lies" is no exception. Soulful anchoring performances from Brenda Blethyn, Timothy Spall, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste captivate, while equally artful bit parts from members Leigh's extensive stock company provide deft comic relief and stinging dramatic asides.
Leigh's mise-en-scen can lean towards slightly dull at times, but it keeps the focus firmly on his cast where it belongs.
