Review of Secrets & Lies (1996) by Justin A — 02 Jan 2009
A high powered and satisfying drama. Mike Leigh is a talented writer and director. Leigh understands real world dialog, the randomness of it all and the serious way people with issues talk. "Secrets and Lies" projected a real Bergman like quality, without ever trying to be something it wasn't.
Brenda Blethyn really delivers an emotionally devastating role as the single Mother. She is an emotional train-wreck who's trying to find a glimmer of hope in her terrible little world. There are two scenes that truly stand out. Two scenes that are single shot takes. Two scenes that really show you the naturalism and professionalism of the actors in the particular scenes.
If you're searching for a drama that's about regular people, this is a film you'll want to see.
