Review of Seconds (1966) by Jon T — 19 Apr 2011
Seconds is a creepy and unsettling thriller effectively directed by John Frankenheimer. It is a study of light and most notably shadows and the infallibility of the human condition. In this vehicle, squeaky clean leading man Rock Hudson has a chance to flex his acting muscles.
Seconds is beautifully photographed by the great James Wong Howe who masterly captures flickering and nightmarish images in dazzling Black and White. Most interesting is the chance to observe California's emerging hedonistic society during the mid 60s in a cultural junction between the Summer of Love and the Manson murders.
Hudson is very effective as a man who wants a second chance in life but in the aftermath of obtaining youth and a new identity he is launched into a nightmare that he cannot wake from because he is victimized by his inability to adjust to the new reality of his new life.
